About Andy Porter
I’m a ‘Sydladian’ (one bum cheek in Sydney, the other in Adelaide) author and filmmaker. Eons ago I studied at the VCA Film & TV School and more recently completed a MA in Creative Writing at UTS. Almost as far back as my film school days I wrote, produced, directed and edited a South Australian Film Corporation funded short film, ‘Nobody I Know’, which did extremely well on the Gay & Lesbian film festival circuit, screening in over 70 cities worldwide and even making an international TV sale and was distributed by the Australian Film Institute.
Since then I’ve had a couple of feature scripts funded through government film funding agencies but, alas, none have gone into production. Grabbing the bull by its horns I self-published a kids’ novel in 2007 based on one of these scripts, Matty Swink: Curse of the Moon Mice. I’m happy to report that I sold my entire print run of approximately 1500 copies; 920 of these sales were on the streets of Sydney’s CBD (see above pic!). One of my happy customers was a literary agent who subsequently signed me up and sold the manuscript to Scholastic Australia.
Scholastic will be publishing their version of Matty Swink in May 2013. Scholastic is excited about the film/tv/digital media possibilities for Matty Swink. I’m now applying this DIY approach (aka GOYA technique, as in Get Off Ya Arse) to filmmaking.
