Makai was a young, homeless queer boy sleeping on the couch of his friend Trevon. He had been living this way for a while, barely scraping by on what little money he could make and relying on his friend for shelter. But that night, Makai was looking forward to something different – a Kiki Ball, a kind of underground competition held in cities around the world.

Makai was ready to leave his troubles behind and forget about his disapproving older brother back home. But things took a turn when the local Kiki Ball was threatened and Makai was forced to confront his family and his past. He could have remained silent, but instead he chose to stand up and fight for his newfound family.

Though Makai was only a teenager, his courage and determination showed that he wasn’t going to let his brother, or anyone else, stand in his way. He was determined to carve out a better life for himself and to resist no matter what challenges were thrown his way. Makai’s story is a reminder that even in the most difficult of times, strength and courage can be found if we choose to look for it.
