Steff, a solitary gay man nearing middle age in Zurich, seeks capital to buy a furniture restoration business. A newspaper’s funeral notice for Martin Hilder, dead from cancer, jolts him: he and Martin had been lovers for three years, and Steff didn’t know Martin was ill. At the funeral, Martin’s gaunt lover, Rex, angrily denounces the family’s denial: Martin, whom he calls “Hilde” and refers to as “she,” died of AIDS. Martin’s will leaves everything to Steff, plus the wish that his ashes be released into the sea off the coast of France. Martin’s mother wants the estate and the ashes: she makes Steff an offer. Rex wants Martin’s wishes honored. Will the ashes reach the sea?

“Hilde’s Journey” is a film that falls somewhere between the realm of missed potential and commendable effort. The underdeveloped script and reliance on conventional character tropes may leave some viewers wanting more depth. The narrative doesn’t venture far from the well-trodden paths of similar stories, and the lack of innovation is evident.

However, the film is not without its merits. It manages to captivate and engage its audience despite these limitations. The strong performances by the cast, particularly Oliver Stokowski and Michael Finger, elevate the material. The film’s visual presentation is also commendable, featuring handsome cinematography that adds to the overall appeal.

In conclusion, “Hilde’s Journey” offers a heartfelt exploration of love, identity, and the consequences of honoring or betraying a loved one’s final wishes. While it may not break new ground in its storytelling, it still manages to leave a lasting impression, making it a worthwhile addition to the cinematic landscape.
