Istanbul, Sofia, and Athens — Where Espionage Meets ASMR

Spanning Istanbul, Sofia, and Athens, the series follows Fallon, a mole within MI6, as he uncovers secrets related to World War II, historical conspiracies, and personal connections. Through whispered dialogue, immersive soundscapes, and atmospheric environments, Roman creates a cinematic experience that is as meditative as it is thrilling.

The journey begins in Istanbul, where Fallon infiltrates the dark world of spies, secrets, and double agents. The city’s bustling bazaars and hidden corridors serve as the backdrop for a tale of betrayal and intrigue. Roman’s use of ASMR techniques draws viewers into the intimate tension of Fallon’s interactions, making Istanbul not just a setting but a sensory experience.

In Sofia, Fallon’s mission deepens as he uncovers a conspiracy involving Nazi-era artifacts. The film introduces Nina, a Romanian gypsy spy, and Francesco, a Sicilian spy, whose complex relationship with Fallon adds emotional depth. The cold, industrial charm of the city is contrasted with whispers and dream sequences, pushing the boundaries of both the spy genre and ASMR filmmaking.

The film’s rich historical layers and atmospheric soundscapes immerse viewers in the world of Greek mythology. The ending hints at future adventures in Venice, where even deeper mysteries await.

Filmed by Alexander Roman

Alexander Roman’s approach to filmmaking is as unique as the stories he tells. As an young boy and filmmaker draws inspiration from cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s, including Alfred Hitchcock, James Bond, and Walt Disney. His films blend nostalgia with modern techniques to create a unique audiovisual experience for the viewer.
That’s why the director recommends listening at low volume with headphones to maximize the experience.

Roman’s dedication to independent filmmaking is evident in the personal connections he forms with his cast and crew. He says many of his perfomers, such as Erika Maki, Jim Patneaude, Nick Jermyn and Iran Melo, return for multiple projects, adding layers of continuity and collaboration to his work. His use of historical research – from Nazi conspiracies to archival footage – grounds his stories in rich context, while his ASMR techniques take viewers into a special meditative world where, if they watch the film the way ASMR films are watched, they can reach a state where they create a story from their own

For Roman, filmmaking is both an artistic and personal journey.

“The process of making a film from start to finish is very chaotic, expensive even on a small budget. The city of Athens in Greece is the third part of the Film Series where the character Fallon obtains a music box containing World War 2 secrets embedded within the musical notes. Fallon will unlock these mysteries in Venice, Italy, delving into the death of Hitler and aftermath of the War.”  – Alexander Roman

Mini-interview with Aleksander Roman

Q: You mentioned your love of vintage films and the spy genre. How did these influences develop in I AM SPY: Istanbul, Sofia and Athens?

Alexander Roman: “I think that whatever you love and inspires you ultimately comes through you. The idea is like striking a match and lighting a candle. The inspiration I’ve experienced through other films, time periods, and mysteries from the past fuels my desire to illustrate it in film and opens up an exploration towards the portray that in a film about the conspiratorial side of World War II, and Athens fascinates me and has started to open up a path for deeper dives into history if Venice happens.”

Q: Fallon seems deeply personal to you. Do you see yourself in it?

Alexander Roman:   “I don’t necessarily see myself as Fallon. That comes from a creative mind, not from real life. Fallon is the role I’ve played the longest and I love English culture. “

Q: How does ASMR contribute to your storytelling?

Alexander Roman:  “My ASMR films are conceived to put the viewer in a different state of mind. It may feel like a magic carpet ride creating a unique. For some, it’s relaxing or even evocative, while for others it may not have any affect.”

ASMR  Trilogy Like No Other

The I AM A SPY trilogy is more than a collection of spy films; it’s a sensory journey that challenges conventions and invites viewers to explore secrets on every level. With his unique blend of ASMR, historical intrigue and queer stories, and diverse characters, Alexander Roman has crafted a series that is both innovative and deeply personal. As we await a potential fourth chapter in Venice, one thing is certain: Romanov’s work will continue to move the needle.

I hope viewers may get to experience something different whatever it may be for each individual.  The intention for ASMR is to relax, unwind, chill out, and go to sleep.  Usually a film is created not to fall asleep, but pay attention to it from start to finish.  My ASMR films I want them to feel like a magic carpet ride where the viewer is drifting in & out of consciousness….almost like you may be dreaming.  Instead of doing drugs to calm down you, make you feel good, or quiet the critical mind that knows every mistake you’ve made and every flaw you carry, slip on some headphones and watch one of my ASMR films…it’s cheaper, safer, and may be healing!
