After watching the first two stories from the I AM A SPY series (Istanbul and Sofia), I put on my headphones and, in the quiet atmosphere of home, I watched I AM A SPY: Athens (ASMR).
The third episode, I AM A SPY: Athens (ASMR), continues the thrilling and intimate narrative established in I AM A SPY: Istanbul (ASMR) and I AM A SPY: Sofia (ASMR). The films follow Fallon, a complex protagonist working undercover as a mole within MI6, as he delves into conspiracies rooted in World War II. In I AM A SPY: Athens (ASMR), Fallon assumes the identity of Mark Camford, a musicologist in search of a mysterious music box containing war-era secrets. Set against the vivid backdrop of Athens, Greece, the narrative intertwines history, espionage, and intimate character studies with groundbreaking gay representation and ASMR-inspired storytelling.
I AM A SPY: Athens (ASMR) is not typical spy thriller. Roman’s innovative fusion of ASMR techniques with classic espionage storytelling sets the film apart, making it an unconventional yet deeply engaging experience. Fallon’s journey through Athens is as much about self-discovery as it is about uncovering hidden truths. By presenting a gay protagonist in a traditionally heteronormative genre, Roman challenges conventions and offers representation that resonates with gay audiences.
The film’s standout feature is its sound design, meticulously crafted by Roman and sound editor Chris Orsi. From whispered conversations to the gentle clinking of glasses, every auditory detail enhances the film’s immersive quality. As Roman explains:
“As a viewer, you have to be in the right mood or state of mind where you’re taking off your critical hat and going with the flow… It’s about going with the flow and letting go of the need to analyze.”
This approach encourages viewers to experience the film’s sensory layers without overanalyzing its plot, allowing the ASMR elements to evoke a sense of calm and intimacy.
Roman reprises his role as Fallon with a measured intensity, capturing the character’s internal struggles with nuance. Sabina Francesca’s portrayal of Nina, the Romanian Gypsy Spy, and Angelo Di Castillo’s Francesco, the Sicilian Spy, add depth to the ensemble, each bringing their unique perspectives to the narrative.
Fallon’s mixed heritage—half German, half Spanish—provides a compelling backdrop for his espionage work. This duality mirrors the film’s exploration of loyalty and betrayal, as Fallon navigates his role as a mole within MI6. The narrative’s historical ties to World War II conspiracies further enrich its thematic depth. Roman’s commentary on this aspect adds:
“As I was developing I AM A SPY: Sofia, I began delving into World War II and obtaining items from that time period… Letters, photographs, and artifacts became integral to the storytelling.”
Challenges of Indie Filmmaking
Roman’s reflections on the challenges of independent filmmaking resonate throughout the film. With limited resources and time, each scene feels like a carefully constructed piece of a larger puzzle. Roman himself describes the process as a “tightrope” act:
“All of these films… are filmed within a short period of time with little to no rehearsal. It’s a tightrope. I’m always skating on thin ice because I’m wearing so many hats.”
Despite these constraints, I AM A SPY: Athens (ASMR) succeeds in delivering a polished and innovative final product.
