Sometimes the line between a serious drama and a parody is very thin, especially when the budget is low. This film takes a classic noir plot and turns it into a campy, awkward ride that feels more like a skit than a thriller.
Accidental Comedy in a Murder Plot
I watched this remake of an old noir classic and it was definitely something. It is about a guy named Christopher who is sick and stuck at home, and he starts thinking his husband is cheating with the doctor and trying to murder him. On paper, it is a tense setup, but in reality, it feels more like a parody. The budget was clearly almost non-existent and it shows in every shot.
The acting is what really takes you out of the drama. Roy Kirkland plays the paranoid husband and he is incredibly intense, but in a way that feels way too much for the scene. It often comes across as funny rather than scary. The husband and the doctor are just as stiff, making the whole thing feel like a recorded rehearsal rather than a finished movie. It has that so bad it is good quality if you like campy indie films.
The atmosphere is supposed to be claustrophobic and tense, but it mostly just feels awkward. The dialogue is clunky and the pacing is all over the place. If you are looking for a serious thriller, this is not it. But if you want to grab a coffee and watch something that is accidentally hilarious because of the over-acting and low production value, it is actually a fun watch. It is a very weird, low-budget take on a classic story that ends up being a bit of a laugh.
