Imagine waking up one day to find out your picture perfect marriage was missing a pretty huge piece of the puzzle. This 1998 drama takes a surprisingly grounded look at how a family reacts when the dad comes out as gay, and it doesn't shy away from the messy, uncomfortable moments that follow.
A 90s Take on a Family Secret
So I just watched A Change of Heart from 1998, and honestly, it holds up better than you might expect for a TV movie from that era. The story kicks off when Elaine, played by the always amazing Jean Smart, walks in on her seemingly perfect husband Jim (John Terry) sleeping with another guy. From there, everything completely hits the fan. It is not just about the husband coming out, but really about how the entire family deals with the immediate fallout.
The Messy Reality
What I really like about this one is that it does not try to wrap everything up in a neat little bow. Elaine is justifiably furious and acts pretty awful to people for a while. Jean Smart totally sells that raw anger and confusion. She does not hold back, and you can really feel her world crashing down. John Terry is also very solid as Jim, playing a guy who loves his family but just cannot keep living a lie. The dynamic between them feels like a real, lived in marriage.
The Kids and the Aftermath
The movie also spends a lot of time on how the kids handle the news, especially the teenage son, Jesse. He takes it really hard and ends up acting out in a genuinely ugly way by getting into a fight. It is uncomfortable to watch him be so terrible, but it adds a layer of messy realism. People do not always react perfectly when their lives are turned upside down. The whole cast does a great job of showing a family in crisis without making it feel too soapy.
If you want a character driven drama that tackles coming out later in life, this one is worth your time. It feels very grounded and focuses heavily on the human reactions. Plus, getting to watch Jean Smart work her magic is always a bonus.
