Love is like a balloon here - bright and uplifting, but so fragile that one sharp look or a nasty word can pop everything in a second.
If you have ever felt that specific weight of a first love that has to stay secret, Balloons is going to hit home. Director Isaiah Henderson filmed something that looks beautiful but carries a pretty heavy and real message about growing up and the fear of being judged.
The movie is all about contrasts. On one side, we see scenes where Keller Kennedy and Braeden Steele are totally relaxed and happy together. On the other side is the cold reality of school hallways where the pressure of everyone else becomes too much. The balloon metaphor is clever - they represent that fragile happiness that is so easy to destroy with one mean comment or a nasty note on a locker.
What I liked most is that the actors feel natural. Keller and Braeden have this immediate chemistry, so their conversations don't sound like a learned script. They just sound like two guys hanging out and being themselves. You can tell they are new to this, but that just makes the whole thing feel more authentic. There is no Hollywood polish, just raw emotion and the insecurity that comes with first serious feelings.
Even though it is only about eight or nine minutes long, the film manages to pull you into their little world. It makes you wonder how many relationships fail before they even get a chance, just because the world is afraid of something different. If you like short films that leave you with a bit of a knot in your stomach, definitely check this one out over your next coffee.
