"Maybe I just wanted to see what would happen." A sharp and honest look at dating, mental health, and the snap judgments we make before the first drink is even finished
There is something really refreshing about seeing a date go wrong for all the right reasons. Firsts (2025) is one of those short films that hits close to home if you have ever been stuck in your own head during a first meeting in WeHo. Charles Realubit is great as Peter, a writer who is basically his own worst enemy, overthinking every line of dialogue like he is already writing the screenplay of his life.
The vibe is very L.A. - sunny daytime dates that feel more like auditions than actual human connection. It gets real when the conversation turns to meds and mental health. I loved how the film handles the stigma without getting all heavy-handed. It is more about that split-second judgment we all make and how hard it is to actually give someone a chance when you are terrified of being judged yourself.
The chemistry between the actors is sweet, even when they are arguing about bipolar disorder and side effects. The ending with the pancakes is exactly the kind of casual, hopeful note that makes these short films work. It is a quick watch, but it sticks with you because it feels like a real conversation you might overhear at a coffee shop.
