The story is very real and stays away from being overly polished. It all starts with George, a sharp insurance broker who leads a pretty organized life. On the other side is Simeon, who spends his days selling kapana at a busy street market. These two come from completely different social and financial worlds, but a random meeting at a bar changes everything.
A Connection Between Two Worlds
The chemistry between them is instant, though Simeon is quite closed off at first. He is constantly worried about what people will say and how his community at the market might react if they are seen together. George is more relaxed and is the one pushing for them to see each other more often. They eventually start spending time together at football matches and meeting each other's friends as the relationship gets more serious.
The Secret and the Conflict
The main conflict happens when Simeon finds out George is HIV positive. George is on regular medication, but he did not share this information with Simeon at the start of their romance. This leads to a lot of chaos and hurt feelings. Simeon reacts with a lot of fear because of old stigmas and the outdated idea that such a diagnosis is still a death sentence. This part of the film is quite strong because it shows how difficult trust can be when there is a lack of information in society.
Moving Forward with Honesty
Instead of turning into a tragedy, the movie takes a more human approach. Through conversations with family and friends, Simeon learns about modern treatments like PrEP and ARVs. He starts to understand that people live normal lives and that George is not a danger to him. Eventually, Simeon finds the courage to visit George at his office to give their love a second chance, deciding to move forward with a lot more honesty and at their own pace.
The lead actors really carry the film. Adriano Visagie and Simon Hanga have a natural vibe together that makes the struggle with their environment feel authentic. It is not a movie with crazy plot twists, but it is a warm and sincere drama about two people trying to find happiness in a place where that is not always easy.
