Morke Rum (Perpetual) is an unconventional love story that centers around a private booth at a seedy sex club. The young Sebastian explores his sexuality and seeking sex/love online. He meets the older Jacob, who takes him to a sex club. In the new and frightening surroundings Sebastian surrender and in their subsequent meetings love sprouts, at least for Sebastian. Outside the darkness of intense togetherness, the reality penetrates. Jacob is full of lust and not love. So when Sebastian’s hopes are disappointed and Jacob pulls away, Sebastian return to the dark room to restore the lost with a stranger.

“Perpetual” is a Danish short film (whose original title is “‘Mørke Rum”), about the tendencies in the relationships of homosexual couples by means of the information technologies. Directed by Peter Lavrsen, and written by Lavrsen, Flemming Klem and Jakob Thomsen, the story describes Sebastian (Nicolas Wollesen) when he meets an older man (played by Mads Hjulmand, like Jacob) on social networks to have sex. Their meeting takes place in a dirty and dull sex club and Jacob does not want to have his first time in a place like this, or with someone other than his boyfriend — it must be something more special.

Of course, Jacob is only there for a reason and the end can be quickly anticipated. This is sad for Sebastian, who confesses that he is gay to Sara (Sofie Topp-Duss) and tells her that he has a boyfriend when this is not the case. Jacob does not answer the calls and Sebastian confuses falling in love and pleasure with a bigger love.

“Perpetual” is very predictable and has a stereotypical ending that does not fit all the reasons why Sebastian takes his life to another level. But the development, despite how short it is, explains what happens many times through social networks, applications, and internet sites that many people use for all types of encounters.

The stereotype of the millennial generation and those born in the first decade of the 21st century, is that people have little commitment, and that their relationships are fleeting, informal and disinterested. The trend will continue because the opening of the Internet allows it, and although it would sound simple that a person seeks sex only for one occasion and keeps changing couples indefinitely, the truth is that often these people feel alone and for a moment or in several, they stop to consider that they would like to find true love.

Such is the message of “Perpetual”, or the one that I find valuable. The end is hasty and does not help more than reinforcing the idea that promiscuity have an origin as the short one points out.

It is a drama with an acceptable script, a suitable photograph, and a clean direction. I am sure that shorts and feature films with this theme will be coming out in the next few years.
