What do you do when you realize you are the "other man" and the husband is sitting right in front of you? This short film turns a messy confrontation into a surprisingly cool conversation between two strangers.
I recently stumbled upon this short called The Least Untrue. If you have about 20 minutes to spare with your morning coffee, I really think you should give it a watch. It is exactly the kind of "stuck in a room" drama that I usually enjoy. It is simple, focused, and relies entirely on the vibe between two guys who should probably hate each other but end up finding some common ground instead.
The Story
The setup is a classic nightmare scenario. Caleb lets himself into Ben’s apartment with a spare key, expecting a romantic evening, but finds Ethan there. Ethan is the husband Ben forgot to mention. Instead of a huge shouting match or a physical fight, the two of them just sit there and wait for Ben to return with takeout. It is awkward and tense, but also very human.
The Actors and Atmosphere
Nicholas Michaels and Nathaniel P. Claridad carry the whole film. They feel like real people you would actually meet, not some polished Hollywood versions of gay men. I liked that the acting felt grounded. Even when they are saying things that are a bit sharp, it feels like a real conversation you would have over a drink when your world is falling apart. The chemistry between them is prickly at first, but it shifts into something almost friendly by the end.
The film does not try to be overly dramatic with the music or the editing. It just lets the camera stay on the characters and lets them talk. It is only 15 minutes long, so it does not overstay its welcome. It is a great pick if you want something that feels intimate and a bit cynical about modern dating. It is a nice reminder that sometimes the person you are supposed to be "competing" with is actually the only one who truly understands what you are going through.
