"Change of location does not count as a dream." Sometimes the hardest part of moving on is realizing that you carried all your baggage with you to the big city.

Ben returns to his small hometown to care for his dying mother, only to find himself face-to-face with the life and the man he tried so hard to leave behind. It is a quiet story about reconciling with the past when you have nowhere else to run.

This film feels like that first cold breath of air when you step off a bus in the town where you grew up. It is a very grounded, low-budget drama that does not rely on big speeches or dramatic twists. Instead, it focuses on the quiet, often awkward moments of being back in a house that smells exactly the same as it did fifteen years ago, even if the people inside are fading away.

      Natural Chemistry and Small-Town Vibes

The core of the movie is the relationship between Ben (Lucas Near-Verbrugghe) and his old friend/flame Joe (Aaron Costa Ganis). Their chemistry is great because it feels real—there is a mix of genuine affection and old resentment that anyone who has ever left a small town will recognize. Sofia Jean Gomez is also fantastic as the sisterly friend who stayed behind, providing a much-needed bridge between Ben's "big city" attitude and the reality of the life he left.

"You should never base the rest of your life on how you feel when you're 18." This line from the movie perfectly captures the regret and the realization that Ben faces when he walks back into his old life.

      The Atmosphere of Regret

The atmosphere is heavy with nostalgia, but not the sugary kind. It is more about the weight of expectations and the realization that running away to New York did not magically solve Ben's problems. The scenes in the house with his mother are particularly sharp; they capture that specific kind of family tension where you love someone but also can not stand to be in the same room as them for more than ten minutes. The lighting and the slow pacing really help sell that feeling of being "stuck" in place.

      A Story About Realistic Choices

What I liked most is that the movie does not offer easy answers. It deals with some heavy themes—addiction, illness, and wasted potential—without being preachy. It is a very honest look at what it means to be an "adult" when you still feel like an emotionally stunted teenager the second you walk through your mother's front door. It is a relatable, bittersweet watch that pairs perfectly with a quiet evening and a glass of wine.
