Mariano and Juan, a couple of six years, leave behind the bustling city life of Buenos Aires to start anew in the countryside. While Mariano nurtures his dream of running a plant nursery, Juan’s literary success complicates their simple life. When Juan’s best friend Carla visits with the shocking news of her pregnancy, it disrupts the fragile balance of their lives, forcing them to confront questions about their love, identity, and future together.

The 2024 Argentine film What We Wrote Together is a sophisticated and polished drama, delving into middle-class gay angst with a captivating subtlety. The story follows Mariano (Santiago Magariños) and Juan (Ezequiel Martinez), who have built a quiet life in the countryside after six years together. Mariano has realized his dream of opening a plant nursery, while Juan’s writing career thrives following the success of his deeply personal novel, which draws on their life together. Their tranquil routine is disrupted when Juan’s best friend Carla (Nazarena Rozas) visits with news of her pregnancy, sparking revelations and questions that test their bond.

Santiago Magariños as Mariano

Magariños delivers a nuanced performance, perfectly portraying a man torn between his love for Juan and his yearning for a simpler life.

Ezequiel Martinez as Juan

Martinez brings emotional depth to his role, capturing Juan’s internal conflict as he navigates success, creativity, and the strain it places on his relationship.

Nazarena Rozas as Carla

Rozas injects energy and tension into the story with her sharp, magnetic portrayal of Carla. Her character serves as a pivotal figure, shaking the foundation of Mariano and Juan’s bond.

This low-key yet reflective film is warm, wise, and unflinchingly real—sometimes painfully so. It’s a story about love’s complexities, the unspoken tensions that grow over time, and the ways external forces can magnify internal doubts. With articulate dialogue and incredible performances, it’s a quietly riveting portrayal of a relationship in flux.
