At the heart of "Cousins" lies the exploration of identity and the concept of whānau (family) in Māori tradition. The cousins, Makareta, Missy, and Mata, each navigate their relationship with their heritage in distinct ways. Makareta distances herself, fleeing an arranged marriage, while Missy willingly steps into her place, recognizing its significance to their family. Meanwhile, Mata, initially a tragic figure stripped of her identity, finds solace and strength within her familial support network. As the narrative unfolds, viewers are offered a rare glimpse into Māori culture, shedding light on the struggles and triumphs of its people.

Looking down at Lucas (Paulo Sousa) from her balcony, his aunt Lourdes (Juliana Zancanaro), who has raised him, cannot conceal her worries. He’s such a quiet youth, a good Christian boy, but always on his own. She wishes that the right girl would come into his life. Shortly afterward, Lourdes receives news that another nephew, Mario (Thiago Cazado), is seeking a place to stay after prison. Mario, arriving when Lourdes is away, is everything Lucas is not: confident, outgoing, and playful. A game of cat and mouse ensues as Mario flirts and Lucas struggles to maintain decorum, all while fending off his own desires. The film, in Portuguese, presents challenges for subtitled innuendo but offers crude humor with lighthearted charm. Even Julia (Duda Esteves), a local teenager, attempts to seduce Lucas with piano lessons. Cousins intertwines a tale of first love with comedy, poking fun at uptight Christians without pitting sexuality against religion. Cheeky and provocative, it offers feel-good entertainment with a touch of softcore erotica.

Adapted from Patricia Grace’s renowned novel, “Cousins” is a cinematic masterpiece that resonates with depth and authenticity. Director [Insert Name] deftly captures the essence of Māori culture, offering audiences a captivating glimpse into the lives of its characters. The film’s non-linear narrative adds layers of complexity, inviting viewers to engage with its themes on a deeper level.

At its core, “Cousins” is a story about the enduring bonds of family and the journey to reclaim one’s identity. The performances by the cast, particularly [Insert Key Actors], are nothing short of exceptional, breathing life into characters that are as complex as they are compelling. From the lush landscapes of New Zealand to the intimate moments shared between the cousins, every frame is infused with emotion and authenticity.

What truly sets “Cousins” apart is its unwavering commitment to authenticity. The film does not shy away from addressing the systemic injustices faced by Māori people, both historically and in contemporary society. Instead, it confronts these issues head-on, offering a powerful commentary on the resilience and strength of the Māori community.

In conclusion, “Cousins” is a must-see film that not only entertains but also educates and inspires.

If you’re in need of a Really Fun feel Good movie with an LGBTQI twist, this is for You.

“…at its heart Cousins is a comedy of manners exploring the sexual awakening of Lucas…”
