Eternal Love (2016)
Amour Éternel (original title)
French director Benjamin Ribeaucourt has posted his short film ” Eternal Love “. And he already knows a nice success on Youtube. It must be said that the theme addressed in this one could not be more universal. We follow the daily life of Nathan and Lucas, two gay Parisians who have been in a relationship for several years. Like many others, their relationship is suffering from a slack. Routine has set in, sex is mechanical, they hardly go out anymore and TV nights are starting to suffocate Lucas.
This independent fiction adopts the look of Lucas who, having arrived in his early thirties and caught in the trap of a job that hardly fascinates him, is in the grip of a real existential crisis. At the beginning of their relationship, he and his lover promised each other eternal love. But the magic and the euphoria of the beginnings passed, the result is not easy to manage every day. He will push Nathan around to spice up their daily life a bit, but faced with Nathan’s very plan/cocooning nature, the efforts tend to fall through. Annoyed and lost, Lucas will then indulge in a dangerous game: connecting to Grindr in secret, tempting encounters with strangers…
If this short film is not perfect (a sometimes rough direction of actors, the somewhat cheesy use of music at times), it does not lack qualities. First of all the writing, very realistic: all the boys who are or have been in a relationship will find well-known situations and questions there, the staging is quite pretty. We particularly have empathy for this poor Nathan, plan plan but cabbage, hopelessly romantic. Finally, we thank the director for having chosen natural boys, with charm, avoiding us the usual eternal playboys.
Nowadays, everything goes very fast, we always want more, we can’t stand boredom anymore. “Eternal Love” makes you want to sit down and reflect a little on the essentials.
