Sometimes the city can be so lonely that you are willing to pretend to be a stranger just to get a ride and a conversation. This short film is a beautiful look at a chance encounter that starts with a misunderstanding and ends with an invitation for a drink.
This short film is a really interesting look at how loneliness can make people do some pretty unexpected things. It all starts on a quiet street in Paris where a young guy is just hanging out. He isn't there to work, he just wants a cigarette and a place to sit for a bit. But because of where he is sitting, a man in a car pulls up and asks him for a price. The younger guy is so starved for company that he just gives him a number and goes along with the whole thing.
The chemistry between the two leads is what makes this work so well. You have François Cluzet as the man in the car, and he plays it very naturally. The scene where they are together and the young guy asks for a favor in return is the turning point of the story. You can see the confusion on the older man's face when he realizes his "hustler" isn't acting like a professional at all. The acting is subtle but very effective, especially when the truth finally comes out.
The best part is definitely the ending. When the boy admits he isn't actually a hustler and that he was just feeling lonely, the whole vibe of the film changes. It goes from a transactional, late night encounter to a genuine human moment. It is a simple story, but it feels very real because many people can relate to that feeling of just wanting to be seen or heard by someone else. The way they eventually decide to go grab a drink together is a great way to wrap up such a short but sweet story.
