War veteran Leonard struggles with the tragic memory of his childhood sweetheart, drowning his pain in alcohol. His new boyfriend Arthur tries to pull him out of the darkness, but a sudden relapse forces Leonard to finally confront his ghosts.
There is a lot of pain packed into this German short film, but it is handled with a lot of care. It takes a hard look at how trauma from the past can completely sabotage a chance at happiness in the present.
Living with ghosts
The story focuses on Leonard, a war veteran who is still haunted by the death of his childhood sweetheart, Richard. To deal with the grief, Leonard has fallen deep into alcoholism over the years. Then we have Arthur, his current boyfriend, who really tries his best to pull Leonard out of this dark place. It is a classic but tragic dynamic of someone trying to save a partner who is completely stuck in their own head. When Leonard relapses, things reach a breaking point, and he has to finally face what he has been running away from.
Intense and believable performances
The whole cast does a really solid job here. The guy playing Leonard captures that heavy, broken energy perfectly, making you understand his pain even when he is pushing people away. Arthur brings a lot of warmth and frustration to the screen, showing how exhausting it is to love someone battling addiction. The atmosphere is moody and grounded throughout the whole thing. There is no forced melodrama, just a raw look at grief and the messy, difficult road to healing.
